We are always looking for volunteers to help make the Talking Book Project a success. We are currently looking for help in the areas listed below. Of course, experience is preferred; however, if you have no experience but want to learn, we might be able to pair you up with one of our experienced volunteers. If you are not interested in any of these areas but would still like to volunteer, please still submit the form below. We will soon need help in other areas.
- Embedded C Developer
The final work remaining on our Talking Book Device is finishing the software that runs on our Generalplus 162003 chipset. See http://www.generalplus.com/products/lcdcontroller/gpl162003a.asp for more on the chipset. See our Talking Book Documents page for a link to a PDF of the Talking Book Device hardware specs.
- Open Source Developers
Anyone can be an open source developer. What we are looking for are developers who are interested in working in a collaborative, open source environment to help us create our Content Authoring and Kiosk applications. The Content Authoring application will primarily run on old Windows XP machines. The Kiosk application will primarily run on an embedded Linux board. The programming languages for both of these projects will be determined by these platform requirements and by the people who commit to doing the early work. See our Talking Book Documents page for a link to a PDF of the various software projects we are or will be working on.
- Project Managers
With so many technical and nontechnical volunteers, we could use some help coordinating the work on our many projects. If you have any experience with people and/or project management and want to help, please let us know!
- Grant Writers / Fundraising / Development Director
Now that have received our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, there are many grants that we would like to research and apply for. Volunteers with grantwriting experience are preferred, of course. But, even volunteers with no such experience but strong writing skills could be very helpful to us. We are also looking for someone to help train the rest of our volunteers on ways they can help us raise funds.
- Marketing Folks
This website could benefit from a marketing person's review. We also have brochures, posters, and other materials that need to be revised.
- Office Administration and Bookkeeping
Although we don't actually have an office at the moment, we could still use help with all those important details that office admins do to keep things running. Help with bookkeeping, paying invoices, booking travel, and contact management are just a few areas where we could use a hand.
- Research Staff on Literacy and Access to Information
We need someone to search through the literature on education/literacy and access to information and compile facts and summaries of research that is relevant to our project. We will use these reports to guide our efforts and to help individual donors and foundations understand why our efforts will make a significant positive impact on global poverty and disease.
- Literacy Educators and Researchers
Based on the latest literacy research and educator best practices, the Talking Book Device was designed to help children and adults improve their literacy skills. We would now like more literacy experts to help us design audio lessons that will demonstrate how powerful this device can be.
